What Should
Design Do?

Layout Design
Typography
Design should be a visually compelling encounter that stirs emotions.
About Design should be a visual experience that evokes emotion. Paula Scher does just that. She is an eclectic designer who inspires my work - she so happens to share the same design ethics as me. I created a mini book to pay homage to Scher's work and present what design should do to me.

Inspiration

I took ideas from Scher's work she did with the Public Theatre. These designs stand out the most because they push design boundaries through the eclectic usage of typography as the main centerpiece that story-tells eloquently.

Final Spreads

Design Should...

Design is not just graphics and text but it's the designer's usage of it that creates a captivating narrative. With that we are able to connect to audiences to showcase emotion while creating fascinating designs.

Here is a picture of an "Asians against racism" rally I took amongst the 2020 social commotion. I chose this photo particularly to tie in with the experience page because it ties with not only the theme but the bold shapes. Just like how design impacts the way we live, the way we live can impact our designs.

Final Thoughts

This project helped explore my design style and allowed me to step out of my comfort zone. I was used to clean, grid layouts that were ultimately safe but design wise it can be lifeless. Learning from Paula Scher's designs and ethics challenge me to use typography and image as the main attraction. Design should be an experience!
